Archeology

Our region is rich in archeological sites. In fact, the megalithic civilisation will leave, above all the southern Corsica, traces of monumental architercture, exceptionnel by its profusion and creativity (74 megaliths and approximately 400 Menhirs).

Filitosa (30 min. by coach):
The site of Filitosa has been classed by UNESCO as being one of the most important sites in the world for prehistory (50% of the armed menhir statues in Corsica and 30% of the Corsican menhir). The site also contains Torres, sort of dungeon of a fortified place.

The Plateau of Cauria (40 min. by coach)
The Palaggiu alignements : the most important alignement in the mediteranean ( 258 monoliths and 7 alignements).
The alignement of Stantari (of Paladini). 25 menhirs, some armed and characteristic of primitive statutory art.
The Fontanaccia Dolmen : the biggest and best preserved in Corsica (2nd millenary BC)
The Rinaiu alignement : "The sacred wood" aligns several menhirs in an oak grove at the foot of rock dwellings once inhabited by neolithic men.

Cucuruzzu (40min. by coach)
The castel of Cucuruzzu is a fortified torrean complex from the bronze age (second half of the 2nd millenary). It is a natural hill topped by a chaotic rock pile which the torreans used to form an oppidum.
The castle of Capula edified on a site occupied by man in the bronze age. At the foot of the rampart a menhir statue can be found (Capula I) orned with a sword. The castle restitutes part of the medieval history of the Alta Rocca region.

The Alta Rocca museum and Levie
Levie, crossroad of prehistory, Its museum reunites the material discovered in the prehistoric sites of the Pieve of Levie. The collections go from preneolithic to the iron age. One can also find the "Lady of Bonifacio", preneolithic skeleton (6570BC). For information concerning actual excavations, contact Janine de Lanfranchi at the Levie museum.

The museum of prehistory in Sartene
Installed in the old prison of the town, built in huge granit blocks, the history of man and civilisations from 6000BC until Roman times is recounted.
